In vitro rue plants (a); “hairy” root culture (b); antimicrobial activity of extracts - Micrococcus luteus (c), Bacillus subtilis subsp. Spizizenii (d)

Agrobacterium rhizogenes-mediated transformation method was used for Ruta graveolens L. “hairy” root culture establishment. Disc-diffusion method was used to study the antimicrobial activity of rue extracts. Ethanolic and DMSO extracts both from shoots of in vitro cultivated rue plants and transgenic “hairy” roots demonstrated antimicrobial activity against several bacteria including Micrococcus luteus, Bacillus simplex, Kocuria carniphila, Sporosarcina aquimarina, Bacillus subtilis subsp. spizizenii, Chryseobacterium shigense and Сitrobacter freundii isolated from soil and water samples.

Keywords: Agrobacterium rhizogenes-mediated transformation, Ruta graveolens L., “hairy” root culture, antimicrobial activity
