Laboratory Presentation

Group of Dr. Yuriy Sheludko performs researches in area of plant natural product biosynthesis. It includes studies on production of recombinant proteins in plants using transient and constitutive foreign gene expression. The aim of studies is understanding of transgene expression mechanisms in different types of plant systems (including undifferentiated cell cultures), selection of transgenic plants with agriculture valuable characteristics and development of biotechnological protocols for production of pharmaceutical proteins or plant based vaccines. The modern methods of molecular and cell biology and recombinant DNA protocols are applied for expression, vector construction and foreign DNA introduction into plant cell. Additionally, investigation of secondary metabolism in plants or in vitro cell systems of pharmacologically valuable species (Rauvolfia serpentina etc.), isolation, purification and identification of single compounds and enzymes is a focus of researches. Group studies influence of elicitors and stress factors on accumulation of secondary metabolites. In the course of researches a wide variety of analytical techniques are applied including HPLC, FPLC, flash chromatography, analytical and preparative thin layer chromatography and spectroscopy methods.

In 2012 Springer released book Biotechnology for Medicinal Plants: Micropropagation and Improvement, including review article Biosynthetic Potential of Hairy Roots for Production of New Natural Products prepared by members of the Laboratory of Natural Product Biosynthesis Systems Dr. Yuriy V. Sheludko and Dr. Iryna M. Gerasymenko]].


In the review authors focus on new substances produced in hairy roots as a result of tumorous root formation by itself or in combination with different treatments and/or genetic engineering manipulations and display that metabolite profile of transgenic roots may differ from that of parental plant, but this feature is not necessarily a disadvantage. Examples of new secondary metabolites from hairy root cultures, not known in parental plants, and products of heterologous gene expression are described. Authors suggest that transgenic roots may be regarded as a promising origin of natural product biodiversity.

20.04.2012 President of Ukraine Viktor Fedorovych Yanukovych awarded diploma of Annual President Prize for Young Scientists 2011 to member of the Laboratory of Natural Product Biosynthesis Systems Dr. Yana R. Sindarovska and to member of Department of genetic engineering Maxim Y. Vasylenko together with collegues from D.K.Zabolotnogo Institute of Microbiology and Virology O. Lozova and A. Demchenko for their collective scientific work "Obtaining of pharmaceutically valuable proteins in plants and studying on transgenic plant resistant to phytopathogenic viruses”. Iryna M. Gerasymenko was Awarded with DuPont Young Professor grant 2012 for research topic "Effectiveness of plastome engineering to produce proteins and/or agriculture plants".
