The famous Ukrainian scientist in the field of cell biology, plant immunity and radiation biology born 27 September 1947 in city Constanta, Romania. He graduated in 1970 from Taras Shevchenko Kyiv State University (Biophysics). He worked first at Institute of Physics, NAS of Ukraine, then as Ph.D. student at Institute of Plant Physiology, NAS of Ukraine. From 1975 till 1986 worked as Scientific secretary of Department of General biology, NAS of Ukraine, Senior staff scientist and Deputy Director at Institute of Plant Physiology. In 1986 headed the laboratory at Kholodny Institute of Botany, Kyiv. In 1990-2016 worked as head of laboratory, Deputy Director at Institute of Cell Biology and Genetic Engineering, NAS of Ukraine. He is currently Chief Research Officer of the Institute.

In A.P. Dmitriev works, a detailed study of the molecular mechanisms of pathogen recognition and expression of plant defense genes successfully combined with the development of practical methods of modifying the immune potential. He world's first discovered and identified phytoalexins of Liliaceae, established their role as markers of induced resistance in plants. He conducted pioneering work on the study of the mechanisms of microbe signals perception and transduction by plants. Examined calcium and superoxide syntase signaling systems and showed their interaction upon recognition of the penetrating pathogen. Put forward and substantiate theoretical concepts: about role of primary and secondary messenger signals in elicitation of defense responses; about coordination of these reactions at different levels of plant structural organization.
Significant A.P. Dmitriev achievements also include disclosure mechanism of radioresistance of Cyanobacteria associated with the activation of reverse transcriptase, creation of a highly effective antimicrobial drug from Allium cepa for the treatment of staphylococcal infections. He has also developed a rapid method for testing the phytosanitary state of crops according to changes in the reflection and fluorescence spectra of damaged leaves. He established a number of important features of the effect of low dose chronic irradiation on phytoimmunity and the virulence of phytopathogenic fungi in the 30-km zone of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. For the first time he received evidence of the formation in the conditions of radionuclide contamination of a new population of stem rust agent, characterized by a high frequency of occurrence of more virulent clones.
Research interests: In recent years, AP Dmitriev developing understanding of systemic induced resistance in plants under the influence of elicitors (immunomodulators), so that does not change the genome of plant cells, but its functioning at the level of gene expression. Induced resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses is not inherited, it can be induce by elicitor treatment plant for a period of ontogenesis. This area has great practical interest, since current methods of breeding are not allowed to combine in new varieties their high quality with resistance to adverse environmental factors.
Teaching: Over 20 years he taught lectures at the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, worked as visiting scientist at the universities in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Japan. He was also lecturing in the UK and Spain.
Author and co-author of over 280 scientific papers, including 10 monographs, 5 inventions. Supervisor of 7 Ph.D. students. Worked at the Highest Attestation Commission of the Ukraine.
